There is some movement toward legalizing online casinos and sportsbooks.

Online Casinos in Connecticut

Although Connecticut has a long tradition with some great land-based casinos, it has not legalized online casinos. There are ongoing discussions between the governor's office and thecasino-owning tribes of Connecticut, but so far no agreement has been reached.

Connecticut expressed some interest in legalizing online casinos in 2012, but conversations never got far enough to call for a vote.

Connecticut does have nearby states where online casinos are legal: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The success of New Jersey's online casino market has clearly given Connecticut reason to push harder to legalize onlinecasinos in their state.

The upshot is that you can register with a legal online casino while you're in Connecticut. That means you can get the casino's bonus offers or deposit, and then play wheneveryou're in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or Delaware. (Do be aware of the casino bonus's expiry date, though.)

Foxwoods Casino was the first Connecticut casino to open and it is also the second-largest casino in the world.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe which operates the Foxwoods Casino had to sue the state to allow it to open. They argued that since the state legally permitted “Las Vegas Nights,” wherelow-stakes casino games were operated to benefit charities, then the tribe should be entitled to do the same. Eventually, they won their case before the U.S. Supreme Court and beganconstruction of their Connecticut casino which was financed by a Malaysian conglomerate (after 22 U.S. lenders turned down their loan requests).

When Foxwoods first opened in February 1992, slot machines were not permitted. In January 1993 a deal was made between Governor Weicker and the Pequots which gave the tribe the exclusive rightto offer slot machines in return for a yearly payment of 25% of the gross slot revenue. The agreement was subject to cancellation, however, if the state allowed slot machines anywhere else inConnecticut.

In May 2008 a new casino was added at Foxwoods. Originally called the MGM Grand at Foxwoods, in 2013 it was renamed the Fox Tower. It is connected to the Foxwoods Casino Resort by a covered, moving, walkway.

History of Gambling in Connecticut

Connecticut has had a slow, steady embrace of gambling since the mid-point of the 1900’s.

Connecticut has allowed some forms of gambling since 1939. That’s when charitable bingo was legalized. Then, in 1955, legislation was passed also allowing raffles and bazars.

Lotteries and pari-mutuel wagering were legalized in 1971.

Special Las Vegas nights, where guests could play limited table games, were first legalized in 1972. These had a run until a 2003 repeal.

As online casino gambling was becoming legal in the U.S., then-governor Malloy pushed for its legalization in 2012. Unfortunately that was rejected.
