If you thought UFC 225 was a stacked card, UFC 226 is bursting at the seams.
Uriah Hall, Anthony Pettis, Michael Chiesa, Francis Ngannou, Derrick Lewis. The UFC have listed some of MMA’s biggest names to fight. The co-main event between Max Holloway and Brian Ortega is enough alone to headline successfully, but then there is the main event.
MMA fans around the globe have already dubbed the July 8 main event as a super fight, comparing it with some of the greats such as Conor McGregor’s victory over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 (and with fair reason). Like the Notorious, if Daniel Cormier wins at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena, he will become just the second fighter in UFC history to hold two belts simultaneously.
If DC wants to be mentioned in the same breath as MMA’s greats, it does feel that this bout will finally get him there. There is no doubt that he is a superb champion, but his two losses to Jon Jones (one overturned to a no-contest) hang over his legacy, and this feat would help to, at a minimum, paint over this blemish and at best, see him challenge as an all-time great.
For Stipe Miocic, the continuing run of Heavyweight title defences is pushing him ever closer to the greats of the sport. Particularly at Heavyweight, where unpredictability (due to the increase in power and ability for one-punch to change the fight) reigns supreme, for Stipe to win four Championship fights in a row is impressive.
Particularly in his win against powerhouse Francis Ngannou, those who doubted Miocic’s world-class MMA ability were quashed.
For the winner, a seat amongst the best to ever fight in the UFC. For the loser, the opportunity to be named among the greats is lost, along with their belt.

Daniel Cormier hasn’t been an underdog to anyone but Jon Jones since 2011, so this will likely be relatively unfamiliar territory, as this means that he hasn’t won from being an underdog also. There is no surprise that Cormier is going in as underdog this time around, fighting the heavier, rangier man, and will need to break his duck in Vegas.
Ufc 226 Poster
For Stipe Miocic, the odds will rarely be one-sided in the heavyweight division due to the unpredictability of heavier men. His odds throughout his title defence against Francis Ngannou were somewhat misconstrued towards the young prospect, and Miocic was overlooked. Apart from that, Miocic has crafted a reputation as one of the greats, which is represented by his normally short odds.
Miocic vs. Cormier: The matchup
I don’t think it is an understatement to say that Cormier will go into this fight with it all to do, particularly with the clear size disadvantage he has against Miocic. Going up a division for a guy that is small in his current weight class is going to be tricky, but it is nothing that Cormier will not have seen before.
Defeating the likes of Volkan Oezdemir and Gustafson shows his impressive ability to get inside the much longer fighter and cause damage. Lets not also forget that the AKA member also started his career as a Heavyweight, and won the XMMA Heavyweight championship and Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix well before he wore UFC gold.
Ufc 226 Time
Daniel Cormier hasn’t been an underdog to anyone but Jon Jones since 2011.
DC is now the busiest man in the UFC however, taking on not just the Ultimate Fighter with Miocic but new presenter roles for the UFC. Will this be too much for one man to take on?
Then there’s the additional power of a heavyweight shot. Miocic has produced KO’s in six of his last seven wins and four of his last five in the first round. Yet Cormier’s chin has stood the test in the past; he took an almighty knee from Gustaffson and recovered well. Indeed, only a Jon Jones shin has ever stopped him.
The left high kick is a move that Cormier is clearly susceptible to because his movement right often leaves him open (we saw Jones capitalise on it in their last encounter). The same could be said in his fight against Oezdemir, but it was something that the Swiss Light Heavyweight couldn’t take advantage of.
Luckily, kicks aren’t Miocic’s strong point, who works the arms more than anything, so hopefully this should not cause Cormier too much of an issue this time around. On the floor, DC is one of the most decorated in the sport. However, whilst not as polished as DC’s, Miocic’s wrestling should be good enough to prevent Cormier from dominating there.
Miocic vs. Cormier odds: Where is the value?
I agree with the odds in this one and give Stipe Miocic the edge, but I wouldn’t blame you to take a bet on DC. A man as decorated as DC with odds as high as 3.300* is a tantalising bet, and Cormier has defeated men as big as Miocic in the past.
Were any of them as good as Miocic is right now? Probably not, and that’s why I like the look of Stipe at odds of 1.377*.

In the overs market, with such power in the ring a knockout could always be one shot away, so odds of 1.925* for under 3.5 rounds could be a smart bet going into this one.
Ufc 226 Predictions
After the disappointments of weight problems at the last few main events in the UFC, there is no doubt that the fans deserve a fight for them to get really excited about. Miocic vs. Cormier should do just that and could go down as one of the all-time great encounters in MMA history.
